District Administration Steps In After Fire Guts 60-Year-Old Sertok Monastery in Thangu

Lachen, June 06: A fire broke out on the night of 5th June at around 11:30 at the 60-year-old Sertok Monastery in Thangu, Lachen.
An FIR was lodged immediately, following which the police reached the spot. Subsequently, the officers and jawans of 225 Transit Camp, along with police and local people, formed human chains and made all possible efforts to douse the fire. The fire was finally brought under control in the early hours of the morning. The probable cause of the fire was attributed to a possible short circuit in the kitchen area.
Despite best efforts, substantial damage was reportedly caused by the fire incident, with the main monastery, kitchen, store room and adjacent structure severely destroyed.
Except for the main statue of the monastery, important antiques, thankas, statues, containers, and other valuable items were reported to have been engulfed in flames.
Following the incident, a joint inspection was carried out today by Sub Divisional Magistrate, Chungthang, Shri Arun Chettri and SHO Lachen Shri Rajeev Bhujel and team.
The joint inspection team interacted with the caretakers, police and the local people and took detailed stock of the damage. The SDM assured that the District Administration would immediately process for Ex-gratia assistance, which would be disbursed on the next working day.
