Business Register is a list of establishments pursuing various economic activities relating to production/ distribution of goods and or services. It is an important source of information for statistical analysis of the business population and it is also a statistical tool for the preparation and conducting of follow-up surveys.
The State Business Register contains the important parameters such as name and address of the establishment, number of workers, major economic activity of the establishment and registration numbers of the establishments with Registration authority. The Business Register will serve the purpose of users to use as a frame for sample surveys and Business Projects.

Vide notification number 20/Home/2014 dated 4/2/2014 DESM&E has been mandated with the responsibility to develop the State Business Register and all the registering authorities (RAs) are required to send the information of the enterprises/establishments being registered under the relevant act as per the requisite format.
In the State there are more than 45 RAs which are issuing trade licenses or certificates to undertake economic activity under the following acts.

1. Sikkim (Repeal) & Miscellaneous provisions) Act 1985 for shops and commercial establishments.
2. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act 2006.
3. Sikkim State Rule Registration of Document 1930.
4. Sikkim Khadi & Village Industries Board Act, 1996.
5. Sikkim Cooperative Societies Act 1978.
6. Sikkim Regulation of Societies, Associations & Other Voluntary Organizations Act 2008.
7. The Sikkim Excise Act, 1956.
8. Companies Act, 1956
9. Factories Act, 1948
