Chief Minister felicitates kidney transplant team
Gangtok, August 15 (IPR): Chief Minister, Mr Prem Singh Tamang, attended a felicitation ceremony for the kidney transplant team at a local hotel in Gangtok today, recognising their contribution to the landmark achievement of the State Government.
In his address, Mr Prem Singh Tamang described the first kidney transplant in the State as a historic achievement for the healthcare sector. He said the milestone reflected the unity, dedication and hard work of the Health Department and the medical teams involved.
He expressed gratitude to the specialist medical team from R N Tagore Hospital, Kolkata, led by Dr TA Jahangir, for its support and guidance, and acknowledged the doctors, nurses, technicians and other healthcare professionals whose efforts contributed to the achievement.
Mr Prem Singh Tamang said the facility would enable people to access advanced transplant treatment within the State and reduce the difficulties faced by patients and their families who previously had to travel to other cities for kidney transplant services.
He said strengthening healthcare had remained a key priority and highlighted the expansion of dialysis services and the introduction of chemotherapy and radiation therapy at STNM Hospital. He also stressed the need for greater attention to diet, lifestyle and preventive healthcare in view of the increasing number of diabetes and cancer cases.
He said the Government had introduced various measures to reduce the financial burden on patients, including assistance through the Chief Minister’s Medical Assistance Scheme for eligible families.
Mr Prem Singh Tamang said healthcare was a collective responsibility involving the Government, healthcare professionals and citizens. He said the Government would continue to upgrade healthcare infrastructure, and strengthen specialised medical services within the State.
Minister for Health and Family Welfare Department, AYUSH and Culture Departments, Mr GT Dhungel, appreciated the leadership, commitment and dedication of Chief Minister, Mr Prem Singh Tamang, towards the people of the State. He said the Organ Transplant Centre and Post-Transplant ICU had been dedicated to the people.
Mr GT Dhungel thanked the specialist medical team from RN Tagore Hospital, Kolkata, led by Dr TA Jahangir, for its support and guidance in conducting the kidney transplant surgeries. He also acknowledged the doctors and healthcare professionals who had worked day and night to make the milestone possible.
He said the centre would provide transplant services closer to home and urged the medical team to ensure proper post-transplant care and regular follow-up. He also directed the concerned teams to keep pace with the latest medical technologies, research and best practices in organ transplantation.
Mr GT Dhungel also acknowledged the courage and generosity of the donor, saying that organ donation required courage and a compassionate heart.
Earlier, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, Mr Tshewang Gyachho, described the establishment of the Organ Transplant Centre and Post-Transplant ICU as a historic milestone for the healthcare sector. He expressed gratitude to Chief Minister, Mr Prem Singh Tamang, for his vision and efforts towards strengthening healthcare services.
Mr Tshewang Gyachho said that on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, the Government had dedicated the State’s first Organ Transplant Centre and Post-Transplant ICU at STNM Hospital, Sochakgang, to the people. He said the facility would provide advanced medical care within the State and reduce the need for patients to travel outside the State for transplant services.
